About Claude Code

Claude Code is Anthropic’s agentic software development product, distinct from the general Claude chat interface. It can inspect a project, propose and apply multi-file changes, run authorized terminal commands, support debugging and testing, and integrate with development workflows in a terminal, VS Code, JetBrains, desktop and web. Developers can access it through eligible Claude Pro/Max or Team/Enterprise seats or authenticate to Claude Console for separately metered API usage. Pro starts at $20 monthly or $200 annually, but it is a shared Claude subscription rather than a unique Claude Code license; the underlying API route is token-billed and can grow with model choice, repository size and context. Generated code and executed commands require developer review and permissions controls.

Best for

Working developers, DevOps engineers and technical teams who want repository-aware coding workflows with command-line and IDE integration; larger teams need policy and spend controls.

Claude Code pros and cons

Pros

  • Operates on an existing repository across files, terminals and supported IDEs rather than providing only isolated autocomplete snippets.
  • Official integrations include VS Code, JetBrains and developer automation surfaces, with a consistent coding-agent workflow.
  • Eligible Claude Pro/Max customers can use Claude Code without a separate seat subscription; billing mode can instead use metered API credits.
  • Official docs document usage monitoring, token/spend tracking and organizational policy settings rather than hiding all API costs.
  • Sampled October 2026 G2 reviews describe faster debugging, boilerplate work and codebase investigation.

Cons

  • −Terminal command execution and broad repository edits create operational risk; developer approvals and code review remain necessary.
  • −Heavy agent loops, long context or larger codebases increase token consumption and may quickly exhaust quotas or paid API credit.
  • −Claude Free does not provide the regular Claude Code subscription entitlement; Pro/Max and commercial seats still enforce shared usage limits.
  • −If an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY is present, Claude Code may bill usage through the API rather than the expected subscription, requiring authentication checks.
  • −Sampled G2 reviewers report occasional mistaken edits, difficulties with branches and long-running context retention; representative controlled task benchmarks were not performed.

Alternatives to Claude Code

Claude Code — frequently asked questions

Is Claude Code the same as Claude?
No. Claude is a general AI assistant; Claude Code is a distinct agentic developer tool that can inspect files and execute coding workflows in terminals and IDEs.
Is Claude Code free?
A Free Claude account does not include the regular subscription-based Claude Code entitlement. Claude Code access generally requires an eligible Pro/Max/Team seat or paid API usage.
How much does Claude Code cost per month?
Via Claude Pro it costs US$20/month or $200/year upfront; Max has $100 and $200 monthly options. Claude Code also supports metered API billing, so there is no single universal monthly price.
Does a Claude Pro plan include Claude Code?
Yes, with usage shared across Claude chat and Claude Code. You can hit session and weekly caps based on combined activity.
What happens if I set an ANTHROPIC_API_KEY?
Anthropic warns that API-key authentication can route Claude Code calls to usage-billed API access instead of using a subscription, so check your login mode and Console settings.
Can Claude Code edit existing repositories and run tests?
Yes. It reads repositories, edits files and can run developer-approved commands and tests; review its proposed changes and execution permissions.
Which editors does Claude Code work with?
