About OpenAI Codex
OpenAI Codex is an agentic coding product that can inspect a repository, implement changes, run commands within configured permissions and help developers review or ship software. Its experiences include the Codex desktop app, local command-line agent, supported IDE extension and cloud tasks where plan and workspace eligibility allow. The official open-source CLI repository shows a local installation path; teams should configure repository scope, tool permissions and review policies before running untrusted commands. The same Codex branding does not mean all ChatGPT plans include the same cloud features or quotas. Codex access is bundled with ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business and qualifying organization plans. OpenAI states Free and Go get limited access but not the Codex Cloud environment available to eligible Plus, Pro and organizational accounts. The current public USD pricing documentation lists ChatGPT Go at $8/month and Plus at $20/month; Pro tiers at $100, $200 and $500/month; Business $20 per user per month billed annually for at least two seats or $25 monthly; Enterprise/Edu require a quote. These charges purchase broader ChatGPT entitlements and included Codex allowances rather than a separate Codex-only subscription. API-key access is token-metered and distinct, with optional purchased credits and variable model/task consumption. This is not a fixed number of unlimited coding jobs. The vendor documents repository code review driven by project-specific AGENTS.md instructions, GitHub review capabilities, local and cloud agent execution and a reusable Codex harness. Effective automation depends on scoped repository access, verified instructions, sandbox settings and human review before merging code. Codex suggestions can be incorrect, change more files than desired, misinterpret architecture, or consume usage allowance faster on long, tool-heavy tasks. A small set of recent product-specific G2 reviews praises speed on repetitive coding and refactoring but also mentions large-project context limits, IDE stability and occasional over-eager edits. These are user reports, not independently measured Toolbaaz results. Codex is most suitable for developers and teams comfortable reviewing diffs, running tests and controlling agent permissions; it is a poor substitute for code review, testing and security design. ChatGPT or Codex business administration and data terms must be evaluated for confidential repositories. No hands-on testing or independently verified performance benchmark has been completed for this Toolbaaz profile.
Best for
Developers, engineering teams and technical founders who want agent-driven codebase changes and code review while maintaining human approval gates.
OpenAI Codex pros and cons
Pros
- Multiple official development surfaces: CLI, IDE, desktop and eligible cloud.
- Can read and edit repositories and execute scoped commands within the chosen workflow.
- Supports project guidance and repeatable code review patterns using AGENTS.md.
- Basic access is bundled even with ChatGPT Free/Go, while paid tiers expand usage.
- CLI is open-source and supports local engineering workflows.
Cons
- −Cloud Codex eligibility does not extend to Free and Go accounts.
- −Usage allowances vary with model, complexity, reasoning and tools, so costs/tasks are not deterministic.
- −Generated code and reviews can miss context; testing, security approval and human review remain essential.
- −Agent permissions and external tools require careful configuration to avoid risky changes.
- −Some G2 reviewers mention unstable IDE panels and overly broad or context-incomplete edits.
