About Cursor

Cursor is an AI-centered code editor and agentic software-development environment from Anysphere. Developers can discuss a repository, make multi-file changes with an agent, use intelligent code completions, and review proposed edits before accepting them. Higher paid tiers add cloud agents, automations, integrated code review through Bugbot, team workflows and eligible third-party models with separate usage charges. It is best treated as a development assistant whose generated changes still require tests, human review, and security checks. As of October 2026 Cursor now sells new subscriptions through The X Subscription, which combines access to Cursor, Grok and X. New buyers see Free, Plus, Premium, Super, and Ultra tiers; previous Pro, Pro+, Start (India) and legacy Teams subscribers can retain their prior plans until switching or cancelling. Included Cursor-model usage is drawn from a weekly shared pool across supported surfaces, not an unlimited agent allowance. Plus uses certain Cursor models at fixed settings and lacks cloud agents, Bugbot, third-party models and Automations; Premium and above permit separately billed third-party model access. The Editor and certain cloud workflows can send code context to subprocessors. Enable and verify Privacy Mode and team controls before supplying confidential repositories.

Best for

Software engineers, indie builders and technical teams wanting an IDE-centric AI assistant for repository exploration, refactoring and agent-directed implementations. Poor fit for people expecting bug-free code without review, flat-rate unlimited third-party model calls, or cloud-agent features at the cheapest tier.

Cursor pros and cons

Pros

  • Editor-native Agent, chat and code navigation reduce context switching during multi-file code changes.
  • Higher plans provide cloud agents, automations and Bugbot review workflows instead of only inline completion.
  • Official docs specify model entitlements and distinguish included Cursor-model pools from separately billed third-party usage.
  • Privacy Mode can prevent code from being used for model training, subject to its documented product-surface and API-key exceptions.
  • Team and enterprise options support common enterprise access controls; integration docs cover GitHub, GitLab, Linear and other developer tools.

Cons

  • −The entry Plus tier excludes third-party models, Cloud Agents, Automations, Bugbot, Origin and adjustable fast modes.
  • −Shared weekly usage pools and separate prepaid third-party credits complicate spend forecasting for heavy coding workloads.
  • −Current X Subscription and older Cursor-only plans have different prices and features, so older comparisons may mislead buyers.
  • −AI-suggested edits may be incorrect or insecure and need human code review plus automated tests.
  • −Code context may be transferred to model subprocessors; security-sensitive teams must configure privacy, provider permissions and data policies.

Alternatives to Cursor

Cursor — frequently asked questions

Is Cursor free?
Yes. Its current Free tier includes limited Agent and Chat requests. Paid subscriptions increase usage and unlock additional functions.
How much does Cursor cost for a new subscriber?
Current X Subscription lists Plus at $8/month, Premium at $30/month, Super at $100/month and Ultra at $200/month before tax; annual payment discounts are available.
Is Cursor Pro $20 a month?
That is a legacy Cursor-only plan. Existing subscribers can retain it, but new customers are directed to The X Subscription tiers; comparing them as identical would be misleading.
Can Plus subscribers use Claude, GPT or other third-party models?
Not under the current Plus terms. Premium or higher enables eligible third-party models billed separately at API list prices from prepaid credits.
What is the difference between included usage and third-party credits?
Included Cursor-model usage is a weekly shared pool across qualifying Grok and Cursor surfaces. Third-party model calls on eligible paid plans are metered and charged separately.
Does Cursor work with GitHub and issue trackers?
Cursor documents connections with GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Linear and other developer services; exact access and permission requirements depend on your tier and workspace.
Does Cursor use my source code to train AI?
Cursor says Privacy Mode prevents code from being used for training in relevant editor workflows. Review exceptions for Grok Bot, bring-your-own API keys and model-specific retention before loading confidential code.
Can Cursor replace a software engineer or code review?
No. AI-generated code and proposed fixes should be independently tested and reviewed for correctness, security, maintainability and licensing concerns.
