About Spellbook
Spellbook is an AI contract drafting and review suite for law firms and in-house legal teams. Its core workflow lives inside Microsoft Word, where attorneys can ask questions, draft clauses, suggest redlines, compare language with market benchmarks and apply reusable playbooks. The separately included Associate agent is designed for multi-document matters, but all outputs still require human legal review. A Google Docs add-in was introduced in beta: it supports Ask, Review and Playbooks, but lacks Word-only features such as Draft and Benchmark, and tracked redlines need the Chrome extension. Spellbook publicly quotes custom per-team pricing rather than a fixed dollar amount and offers an eligible seven-day trial. Its security pages claim SOC 2 Type II and negotiated zero-retention arrangements with AI subprocessors; buyers handling confidential material should inspect the actual assurance documents. There is no verified Toolbaaz hands-on assessment, independent legal accuracy test or approved research score.
Best for
Commercial legal teams working regularly with agreements in Microsoft Word; poor fit for unmanaged legal self-help, fixed-budget buyers without sales contact, and organizations requiring uniform Word/Google Docs feature parity.
Spellbook pros and cons
Pros
- Drafting, suggested redlines and contract questions inside Word reduce application switching.
- Reusable playbooks can help standardize clause positions across transactions.
- Associate supports multi-document work with lawyer oversight.
- Vendor documents security controls and provides cloud document integrations.
- Seven-day trial enables a supervised evaluation against real, suitably redacted contract types.
Cons
- −No publicly listed seat price; full cost requires a negotiated sales quote.
- −Google Docs beta lacks core Word features and needs Chrome for suggested redlines.
- −Legal accuracy, citations and negotiation suggestions require qualified human checking.
- −Integration and permissions need IT/legal confidentiality review before uploading sensitive contracts.
- −No Toolbaaz first-hand test; small G2 review sample and invited reviews limit generalization.
